As Australia’s aged care sector continues to evolve in response to national reforms, the integration of digital tools such as My Health Record (MHR) has become essential. MHR supports a higher standard of care, enabling improved communication and coordination across healthcare providers, especially crucial for residential aged care.

MHR plays a critical role in meeting national aged care requirements, enhancing quality of care, and improving outcomes for residents. Here’s how:

• Alignment with Aged Care Reform and Quality Standards:
  • Royal Commission into Aged Care Recommendations 66 & 68:
    • Mandates aged care providers to register for and use MHR.
    • Facilitates the viewing and uploading of key clinical documents to support seamless transitions between aged care facilities and hospitals.
    • Supports the use of the soon-to-be-released Residential Transfer documents, streamlining care continuity.
  • Aged Care Quality Standards – Standard 3(3)(e):
    • Encourages documentation and uploading of residents’ advance care plans and medication information.
    • Allows ambulance services, hospitals, and other external care teams timely access to critical health data.
  • New Aged Care Act 2024 – Section 153 (Effective 1 July 2025):
    • Empowers providers with access to residents’ vaccination schedules, aiding in the onboarding and ongoing care of new residents.
