Over the last 10–15 years, many adult patients with chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) have been started on opioids to assist with pain management. Current evidence does not support the long-term prescription of opioids for CNCP (Agency for Clinical Innovation Pain Management Network).
The highest rates of opioid-related hospitalisations were seen in males, Aboriginal people, people aged 35–44 years, and people in disadvantaged socioeconomic groups. Rates of opioid-related hospitalisations were six times higher for Aboriginal people in NSW in 2018–19. Wastewater analyses indicated that rates of pharmaceutical opioid use (licit or illicit) were higher in regional NSW (Opioid Use and Related Harms in NSW Surveillance Report to December 2019 NSW Health).
This quality improvement activity will provide your practice with evidence-based information and resources to assist with opioid prescribing and de-prescribing.
