Electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Department of Health, Services Australia and the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA).
Changes were made to Commonwealth legislation in October 2019 to legalise electronic prescriptions. ADHA has now launched the ePrescribing token model for implementation by general practice, Aboriginal Medical Services and pharmacy.
You can read more about ePrescribing and the token model on the ADHA website.
ePrescribing will benefit many of your patients, but to commence ePrescribing, your digital infrastructure must be up to date and meet the baseline requirements for ePrescribing.
The baseline digital infrastructure requirements include:
1) Assess your digital infrastructure to understand what your potential gaps may be. Click here to access the checklist.
2) Complete the steps outlined below against any area identified as a gap in your practice.
3) Prescribers and practice staff to complete training in preparation for electronic prescribing – token model.
4) You may be interested in the eHealth Practice Incentive Program (ePIP). See below information about eligibility and registering your practice.
