No matter how young or old we are, most people need a sense of belonging and connection. As we grow older, it can become more challenging to stay connected, yet connection plays an essential role in our emotional and physical health.
Maintaining friendships and having a visitor to look forward to can help older people stay connected and feel valued and important in the community.
The Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) is an Australian Government funded program that matches volunteer visitors to older people living in their own home and waitlisted/receiving a home care package or those living in an aged care home. Each volunteer visitor is carefully matched to an older person and visits on a regular basis to enjoy the simple things in life — having a cuppa together, a walk in the park, watching TV, etc. For many older people, these visitors provides much-needed companionship and opportunities for outings.
Referrals for the program are free of charge. They can be submitted as self-referrals, from family or friends, health professionals or aged care providers.
