On 13 November 2020, the National Cabinet endorsed the Australian Government’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy. The policy outlines the approach to providing COVID-19 vaccines in Australia.
The Commonwealth plans to roll out the COVID-19 vaccine program in 2021 and currently has agreements in place with four different vaccine suppliers. The goal of the program is to ensure every Australian who wants to be vaccinated for COVID-19 will be in 2021.
Key points from the COVID-19 Vaccination Policy include:
- The vaccine will be free for all Medicare-eligible Australians and most visa-holders.
- It is likely all vaccines listed in the policy are multi-dose vials and people will need to receive two doses of vaccine (given approx. 3-4 weeks apart).
- Vaccine supplies will likely come in waves, depending on if and when they are proven to be safe and effective.
- Initial vaccine supplies will be available for priority population groups first:
- Health and aged care workers; other care workers, including disability support workers.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, older people and people with underlying select medical conditions.
- People working in essential services (key occupations required for societal functioning).
- While there will be a strong campaign to encourage COVID-19 vaccination, it is not mandatory.
- Vaccination sites are yet to be determined, however may, over time, include general practices, GP respiratory clinics, pharmacies and others.
Vaccine providers are advised NOT to purchase additional vaccine storage equipment for the COVID-19 at this stage. The Commonwealth has stated there will be more information available on vaccine distribution in the coming months.
