The cancellation of a regional aged care conference had a silver lining on Thursday with two days of catering being delivered to Coffs Harbour fire crews. The donation by North Coast Primary Health Network (NCPHN) and the Centre for Healthcare Knowledge & Innovation (the Centre) will feed more than 200 firefighters and volunteers.
With news of fire conditions worsening, the Centre for Healthcare Knowledge & Innovation (a North Coast-based workforce development centre) made the tough decision to postpone its Aged Care Beyond 2020 conference at Bonville Golf Resort.
“Our priority lies with the safety of those travelling to and from the conference and with the incredible volunteers fighting to prevent further loss of life and property,” said Julie Sturgess, CEO of North Coast Primary Health Network, a partner of the Centre.
“Instead of unpacking the Royal Aged Care Commission Interim Report, we are now feeding more than 200 firefighters and volunteers while keeping our delegates safe.”
The conference hosts were only too happy to package up the catering ready for delivery up the mountains and to the fire frontline. Local RFS crews received whole fruit, scones, salads, lasagne, curry, rice, cookies, cheese and crackers, frittata and cold drinks.
Tabitha Hobbins, North Coast Regional Administration Co-ordinator at NSW Rural Fire Service, expressed that the food delivery came at just the right time.
“A number of fires have already joined up and more are expected to join in the coming days. We’re all very appreciative.”
