General Practice Respiratory Clinics

General practice respiratory clinics have been established at the following North Coast NSW sites:

  • Murwillumbah, Casino, Ballina and Yamba in Northern NSW
  • Nambucca, Kempsey and Wauchope in Mid North Coast

A mobile respiratory clinic is also available in Northern NSW to make it easier for people in smaller communities to access testing.

The clinics provide assessment, testing and diagnosis for people with mild to moderate respiratory symptoms that could be consistent with COVID-19 infection. People do not need a referral to attend clinics, but must make an appointment online or by phone.

The clinics are funded by the Australian Government and form part of a whole of system collaborative response to COVID-19. They complement the NSW Health COVID-19 Fever Clinics across the region and will coordinate with general practice to provide continuity of care to our communities.

Exercise as Medicine FAQs
GP respiratory clinics will assess, test and diagnose mild to moderate respiratory conditions, including COVID-19, influenza and pneumonia.

The clinics are funded by the Australian Government as part of the $2.4 billion health package to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The clinics form part of our integrated health system response to COVID-19.

General practice respiratory clinics will:

  • Complement existing LHD COVID-19 Fever Clinics across the region.
  • Reduce demand on our hospital emergency departments and free them up to support people with severe symptoms.
  • Keep people with potential COVID-19 related symptoms separate from patients visiting general practice for non-respiratory issues. This will support practices to focus on chronic disease management and regular appointments.
  • Optimise the use of available stocks of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Healthy North Coast worked with Northern NSW and Mid North Coast Local Health Districts to identify locations that will provide optimal service access for community members. The analysis considered population data, travel times and projected service demand. The locations also complement the existing NSW Health COVID-19 Fever Clinics across the region.

People who have mild to moderate respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat or fatigue.

People with severe acute symptoms should not attend the clinic. If you have severe symptoms, please call 000 or present to a hospital emergency department.

People with health issues other than respiratory symptoms should not attend the clinic.

Bookings may be made online via HotDoc or by phone. Booking information for each clinic is available here.

No. You do not need a referral to attend a respiratory clinic.

  • Upon arrival at the clinic, patients are greeted by a receptionist and provided with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
  • Patient information and demographic data is collected at reception
  • Patients flow through to an assessment area where they undergo an assessment of symptoms
    • Patients deemed not at risk of COVID-19 will receive usual care for their respiratory symptoms
    • Patients assessed to be at risk of COVID-19 then receive testing and are requested to return directly home to isolate awaiting pathology results
  • Further guidance on the assessment process is provided in the Australian Government Telehealth and Respiratory Clinics Infographic available here.

Respiratory clinics will communicate test results to patients by phone or text message.

A copy of pathology results will also be sent to patients’ usual GP. The clinic will generate patient summaries and share these with GPs via an agreed communication method.

There is no cost to patients to attend the clinic.

The clinics have been established in accordance with the highest infection control standards and guidelines. The purpose of the clinics is to keep our patients, health professionals and communities safe by providing a dedicated service to support people with respiratory symptoms.

The Australian Government and NSW Health will continue to assess the need for respiratory clinics. Information about clinic locations is published at NSW Health COVID-19 Fever Clinics and the Department of Health website.

Opportunities may be available for GPs, nurses and admin staff to support clinics with medical, administrative or logistical support. If you are interested in working at your local respiratory clinic, please email: [email protected]
