Nurse Coordinator
for ADHD in Children
Applications are open until 25 November at 5:00pm
Implementing a shared model of care for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children
Healthy North Coast is pleased to announce a new commissioned service and is seeking a qualified and experienced Nurse Coordinator to help implement a shared model of care for managing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.
The Nurse Coordinator for ADHD in Children will implement a shared model of care for the management of ADHD in children, across Northern NSW and the NSW Mid North Coast, by supporting integration between primary care and paediatric outpatients. Effective integration is fundamental to the success of co-management models. It improves the experience and efficiency of care for patients, families and care givers and contributes to improved health outcomes.
The service provider will be responsible for expert clinical organisation, coordination, leadership, integrated and transitional care support for managing ADHD in children.
Impact in the community
ADHD is the most common mental disorder in children, affecting 11% of males and 8.2% of females. If untreated, it can lead to lifelong challenges and an increased risk of substance use disorders, including higher rates of nicotine dependence and drug or alcohol issues. Social disadvantages, such as parental unemployment and poverty, increase the risk of ADHD in children.
In the Healthy North Coast region, covering Northern NSW and the NSW Mid North Coast, there are long waitlists for paediatric services, particularly in disadvantaged areas. These delays can worsen outcomes for children with ADHD, increasing the complexity of their care. Despite having fewer specialists per 1,000 residents compared to NSW and Australia, the North Coast has higher usage rates of specialist services.
Service implementation
The trial program is due to commence in the second half of 2024 and will run for a period of 24 months.

The role is advertised as a senior nurse coordination position with key leadership, clinical and education qualities and experience requirements listed in the RFP Section A Invitation. These key requirements are directly aligned with clinical nurse consultant level capabilities and applicants must be a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia with potential post graduate qualifications in paediatrics or a relevant clinical area.
The position will work closely with the Northen NSW LHD, the Mid North Coast LHD and general practices across the region.
A hybrid working arrangement will be required. It is anticipated that the rollout of the shared model of care for ADHD management in children will initially commence in the Northern NSW region, with the majority of the early program work involving stakeholders in that region.
This will involve a combination of face-to-face engagements in hospital and general practice settings as well as home-based program design and implementation support activities.
The $260,000 budget is allocated for two years, covering wages, setup, equipment, accommodation, and travel. You are expected to break down this budget by allocating hours for frontline work (minimum of 28 hours per week), factoring in wages, and estimating travel and accommodation costs based on your time in the region. This will be part of the evaluation process, where value for money across categories will be assessed. The budget guidelines are flexible, and you must map out how you would organise your time and expenses.
The Health Direct GP Service Locator will have an up to date listing of general practices within our LGA’s and can show them via listing or map view the 12 LGA’s over the 2 Local Health District catchments are as follows:

We don’t have a strict requirement for a candidate’s location, but a base within the HNC region footprint would likely support the role’s demands, particularly with frequent in-person engagement with local health services. The first rollout will involve the Northern NSW Local Health District, so for the first 6 to 9 months, there may be a higher frequency of interactions with stakeholders in that area. Candidates outside the region might face challenges with travel, accommodation, and expenses.Content
The 28 hours is the complete service delivery which should be inclusive of documentation, GP and Paediatrician consultation, and any other indirect tasks or activities required. Education, planning, and change management – it is a package of time to deliver the activities outlined.
We would be happy to consider a 24 hour/week proposal, or alternatively your budget forecasting could include a greater period of leave. The 2 year contract period for a nurse co-ordinator would ordinarily be expected to have a leave provision, you may wish to revise your labour resourcing to deliver 44 or 46 weeks per year at a nominal hourly rate that will allow sufficient budget allocation for the non-labour expenses associated with service delivery.
We have allocated the maximum budget for this program, and the indicative hours were calculated based on comparative CNC award rates, with leave and other on cost provisions incorporated into total budget.
